Is Teaching for Me

Teaching is a profession that one goes into to teach those to learn and grow within everyday life. To some teaching is just a career but to others it brings joy to there lives because they love what they are doing to help. Teaching is important because it helps not just the mind but also the body to learn and grow so kids can do well within there future career, collage, and even relationships. Within teaching not just kids learn but the teachers also learn and grow. If we didn't have teachers then it be pretty hard for those to be able to accomplish what there heart mostly desires.

After spending time in the Service Learning Placement I have decided to stick with my major and be the teacher I have always wanted to be. I chose to become a professional teacher because I love kids , always have since I was a little girl. I remember playing school with my cousins when I was little and the joy it brought to them when we played. Children have always been a passion of mine no matter the field. I know this is what I am met to do because being apart of something magnificent is something not a lot of people can do. I believe I will be the best preschool or kindergarten teacher I can be. This is a field I truly am compassionate about.

I believe this is the best career path for me because there is nothing else in the world I would rather do . I see both my parents and how much they love teaching. Even though it can be hard at times they still do it because they are truly happy when it comes to being apart of something great. I hope one day to be a great teacher just like my parents are. I don't believe this is the hardest profession someone can go into being I am a single mother and that is hard.

The Service Learning Placement I believe has influenced my decision. I have loved going out there and being a part of something minus the having to wake up early. I loved seeing the smile on there precious faces and watching them learn. I felt so bad for some of the kids because I knew they weren't going to make it to the next grade but I still tried to teach them as best as I could. I am going to continue volunteering at the elementary school because I want to be able to learn more and be apart of there learning experience.

My next steps are going to be to continue collage with the best grades I can get. I am going to try and get a job at a day care or even as a teachers assistant so I can be able to be around children. I know what I am choosing to do is going to be hard but all I can do is try my best . The best I can do will have great consequences and I will be able to achieve my dream.

Classroom Assessment

Service Learning is being able to go into the classroom and interact with the students and learn from experience. This is important because it gets students to have an idea on what happens in the classroom and if it's a field they truly want to go into. Course topics are an outline of the main points in a subject or different course lectures  of the curriculum. They are important because it shows students what is going to be taught and how. In my service learning I have seemed to make different types of connections within the course topics and within Service Learning.  I have seemed to learn that there are many different ways to teach, learn, and grow.

We all learn in different ways. I have always noticed that I learn more hands on when it comes to being able to teach and just grow. Being able to articulate my own learning and understanding is like being able to comprehend what is going on around me not just within the classroom but outside also. How have I done this by being apart of what is going on around me. In my Service Learning I have noticed that learning really is important I have learned from this class and the Service Learning that there is different types of learning. There is visual, physical, verbal, and aural. Visual is using pictures or grafts, physical is using body, verbal is using words, and aural is using music. So yes blogging is helping because it makes me watch and listen to learn more about teaching.

What ways have I seen growth of learning from the first blog to this one well different subject matters. I have learned more about each students and even the school. Canyon is a good school with great teachers that I have gotten to know and work with. They have been so kind. Each student not just learns differently but also they want to learn. The teacher I work with teaches in her own style then from other students which is very unique.

Standards and Accountability

Having standards in the classroom is important because prepare each individual student to succeed in over all life such as collage and a career. Within my placement I see many different things which includes them learning different things. I see them learn about math, art, language, music, and the world around them within different activities. Even though they learn about a variety of things there are certain subject matter standards that I see her teach more often. They do many things within the fine arts for examples drawing animals, shape designs, and even finger painting. The fine arts are important because it gets the kids artistic eye going and it's important to have art in ones life. Lately they have been doing lots of activities within mathematics. The other day they just learned about the number line and now are working on adding and subtracting using the number line. Mathematics is important because it used in everyday life for example telling time, using money, and even making decisions in ones life. Lastly I see English Language used when they read stories and learn about poetry and rhymes.

Even though many subject matter standards are being used within the classroom there is some I haven't seen at all. I haven't seen her teach Health Education, Science, and Social Studies. This I probably don't see this because they are just kindergartners and before they can get to these kind of topics they need to learn from the beginning.

I feel like the cooperating teacher feels like it's important to learn a variety of different standards and materials. The standardized testing helps not just students but teachers and families as well to learn and grow. Having a good way to test what students have learned through out the year to get ready for the next year. Since these kids are in kindergarten they haven't gotten a chance to go through such tests but will be ready to in the future.

History of American Education

Although Canyon is 99% white school. I have noticed some verity within the school which wouldn't be possible if the Brown vs. Board act wasn't established. The Brown vs. Board act is an act that was established by a group of board members in the year 1954. This act made it possible for whites and blacks to go to school with one another. All the kids I work with our white but the other day I saw a latino boy who stopped and talked to me. He was very great full to attend an very accepting school since he has a hard time speaking English but has gotten a lot better since he started school.

The teacher I work with believes that every student should get a fair chance to learn and grow within the educational system. This is really important since every student is different. I see support for English learners within this school. For example when they are doing an assignment and a student doesn't quite understand or get what they are reading then the teacher will go and help the student by reading it a lot slower. I found out that there is an English class for those who need to learn the language a lot better.

The disability act and the no child left behind act was established in 1975. These acts allow everyone to go to school no matter how different a child can be. I haven't really noticed any disabled children that I work with but you can't really tell. One or two of the students I work with seem to have ADHD or ADD. I have two disabilities so knowing how to help them is extremely important since I do understand. You need to be patient when working with those who are disabled.

Engage Learners In Today's Classrooms

Engage learning is different educational strategies which the class or groups of individuals learn by doing different activities or projects. I have noticed while working in the classroom that the teacher cooperates engage learning in many different ways while they teach.

First three days a week the students get the chance to work on engage learning on computers. Each individual student gets a computer and they get to work on different learning games that help them learn. They will use websites such as ABCmouse.com and Abcya.com. These websites they use to play games that involve answering and solving problems. I have noticed on these sites that each kid is in a different area of learning and that when they are able to get to a specific level they are able to get a certain amount of coins and then eventually buy something in the gift shop.

Second is there rotations. Every Thursday they have three rotations that they go through. Each different individual table will have a different learning activity that they will do. This last time one table was read to about nursery rooms and they had to draw mother goose. Another table played a matching game where they had to find the words that rhymed with one another. Another table got to cut out stars and glitter them. The final table learned about different shapes by playing with shape blocks and trying to get them to fit with one another.

Finally at the beginning of class I have noticed they will use music to learn about there vowels, letters, and even numbers. Songs such as Old MacDonald, twinkle twinkle star, and even songs I have never heard before. Four students will be involved with either leading, pointing at the words, helping the students, or just buy having fun. They all get to interact with the music and have fun while learning.

Even though they do many different activities in the classroom that are engaging some are not so engaging. For example when they do P.E. they aren't learning they are more like playing and getting exercise like it's recess time. P.E. is a good idea because it keeps the kids healthy and strong but they don't actually learn anything from it. P.E. can be made to be engaging by asking questions during the game that will make it more interesting. Overall since they are kindergartners most of the activities they do are engaging and they do learn from what they are doing.
